The Northeast US is where field hockey is commonly played from a young age through college. Around the world, field hockey is a sport played by both men and women, however, in the US, it is a women’s sport. Saint Louis marks the westernmost city where the sport is commonly played at the club and high school level. If your daughter wants to play field hockey and has interest at playing at the collegiate level, understand that the overwhelming majority of college teams are in the Northeast.
Club
There are two main field hockey clubs in Saint Louis, Gateway and AIM. Club teams play their season in the winter and spring, starting after the high school season has ended.
High School
There are few High School field hockey teams in Illinois and outside of the Saint Louis metro area in Missouri, for this reason, league play and championships involve teams that are from both Illinois and Missouri. There is a Midwest Field Hockey Championship for all schools and a Public School Championship both run by the Saint Louis Field Hockey Association. Public and private schools both play in the same divisions and there is no school size grouping such as Division or Class. High School field hockey teams play in the fall season. League play is based upon previous years results rather than Conference or District. Gateway runs the Gateway Classic Field Hockey Tournament a mid high school season tournament.
Below is a list of the high schools that presently have field hockey teams.
